In the sky

Sadachbia is a white star of the fourth magnitude in the Water-Bearer's urn, the central star of the small Y-shaped figure from which the stream pours, about a hundred and sixty-four light-years away and some fifty times as bright as the Sun; a close companion circles it every two months and shows only in its light. With three neighbours it makes the twenty-fifth mansion of the Moon, the fourth and last of the lucky stars, and its name is the mansion's: sa'd al-akhbiya, the fortune of the tents, or of the hiding-places. Three stars for the tent-poles and one sheltered inside; and when the station rose at dawn the rains were over and the creatures that had wintered hidden in the earth came out into the warm.

The star stands eight degrees north of the ecliptic, so that its contacts in a chart are by longitude.

The myth

The Water-Bearer pours, and the urn is where the pouring begins; Sadachbia sits in the urn itself, at the source of the stream. Robson gives it the nature of Venus and Mercury, charm and quickness, and reads it as a star of personal grace and good fortune in hidden things; the desert lore gives it emergence, the season when what has sheltered comes out. The Latin writers misread the name as the butterfly, and were accidentally right, since a butterfly is a creature that comes out of a tent it made for itself.

Sadachbia is the star of coming out of hiding. In a chart it speaks of the late bloomer and the quiet one who surprises everyone, of talent kept under canvas and then shown, of charm that was always there and is noticed when the tent is struck, and of the finding of hidden things: the gift lost and recovered, the quality in a person that no one else had seen.

What it gives

  • Emergence The capacity to come out, late and whole. This native's unveilings are events, and their second acts are their best.
  • Charm without display Venus with Mercury: a grace that works at close quarters, in conversation and in small kindness, and is noticed most once the native has stepped out of the tent.
  • Finding hidden things The lucky star of hiding-places. The native finds what was lost, sees the quality in a person no one else saw, and is good at the work of recovery.
  • Shelter for a season The tent well made. This native knows how to protect what is growing, in themselves and others, and when to strike camp.

What to watch for

  • The tent never struck Shelter become prison; the talent, the feeling or the self that stayed under canvas for a life.
  • Charm kept inside Grace that only the tent's own people ever see; the native loved at home and unknown abroad.
  • Hidden things hoarded The finder who keeps what was found; recovery that becomes a private collection.
  • Coming out too fast Emergence done all at once after too long a shelter, so that the world meets a stranger and the native meets a wall.

How to work with it

The native does well to set a season for the tent: a date fixed for striking camp, after which the work is shown, the feeling spoken, the self brought out. They are almost always more ready than they believe.

It helps to come out in stages, to one person before the whole room, so that the charm is met and not merely announced.

What is found is best given back or shown. The finder's luck grows when the hidden thing is brought into use, and the tent is pitched again, elsewhere, when the next season of growing begins.

In brief

Sadachbia is the lucky star of the tents: emergence, charm without display, the finding of hidden things, shelter for a season. Its difficulties are the tent's, camp never struck, grace kept inside, found things hoarded, and an emergence too sudden. The placement works best where the shelter has a season fixed and the native comes out in stages.

The shared observatory

For thousands of years astrology was built one way: someone watched the sky, watched a life, and wrote down what seemed to answer what. Everything in the tradition — every verdict the old texts hand down about Sadachbia — began as one person's observation, kept, compared, and corrected across generations. This page continues that work. If Sadachbia stands close upon a planet in your chart, add your observation to the record: what it has given, and what it has asked of you.

Which planet does Sadachbia stand upon in your chart, and how close is the orb? How do you experience the conjunction — where does it show in your life, and what has it taught you? The calculator will find your conjunctions if you have not looked yet.

No account needed — a nickname and your words. Observations are reviewed before they appear, which usually takes a day or two.

Read Sadachbia beside its hundred and twenty-two companions in A Book of Fixed Stars, or raise your own chart to see which stars stood close at your birth.
