Zavijava is a near neighbour and a near twin of the Sun's kind: a yellow-white star thirty-six light-years away, a little heavier and brighter than the Sun, middle-aged and steady. It marks the western corner of Virgo, the head-end of the great reclining figure, and it lies barely half a degree from the ecliptic — directly on the road of the Moon and planets, which pass over and beside it century after century. Its modest magnitude belies its position: few stars sit more exactly on the sky's main thoroughfare. Because it keeps so close to the Sun's road, the Sun itself passes within a degree of it each September, and the planets cross it in their turns; astronomers in 2025 reported a wobble in its motion that suggests a giant planet of its own, still unconfirmed — the quiet corner may have a household.

The myth

The name descends from the Arabic for the corner of the barking dog — an older figure that guarded this stretch of sky before the Virgin absorbed it — and corner is the sense the tradition kept: the joint where two walls meet, the guarded angle. Mercury with Mars is the nature, mind with muscle, and the old summaries give it strength, beneficence and a combative streak that shows only in defence. A corner star with a watchdog's name, standing on the king's highway of the ecliptic: the reading writes itself, and the catalogue has it — quiet strength, and the fight that wakes for others.
