In the sky

Rigel is generally the seventh-brightest star in the night sky, and the most distant star of that first rank by a wide margin: it stands about 860 light-years off and holds magnitude 0.12 anyway, which requires a blue-white supergiant of enormous output — tens of thousands of Suns at the least, by some estimates far more. It varies only slightly, between about 0.05 and 0.18. It has close companions, a small system of fainter stars in its glare. In the winter sky it marks Orion's forward foot, the bright corner below the belt and to the west, diagonally opposite red Betelgeuse at the shoulder — the hunter stands on Rigel.

The myth

The name is the Arabic rijl, foot. Orion strides westward with his weapon raised, and this star is the foot that bears him — the one planted forward, at the edge of the river Eridanus, which rises beside it and winds south across a quarter of the sky. A foot is not a glamorous member for so bright a star, and that is the point the old astrologers took: the whole striding figure rests on it. Ptolemy gave it the natures of Jupiter and Mars together — expansion and drive in one body — and the tradition since has counted it among the most fortunate stars in the sky: honours, riches, renown, and a marked bent for invention and teaching.

What it gives

How to work with it

Choose fewer starts, deliberately, and finish what is chosen. A short list of completed things does more for this placement than a long list of begun ones, and the finishing is where the promised honours actually condense.

Teach. Of all the outlets this star offers, teaching is the one that consolidates rather than scatters: it obliges the native to stay with a subject past the interesting part, and it converts speed into transmission.

Keep a record of what has been completed, and consult it when restlessness argues that nothing is moving. The feeling is not evidence.
