Mirach is a red giant nearly two hundred light-years away, swollen to some eighty-six times the Sun's width and glowing a warm deep colour the naked eye can just catch. It marks the hip of Andromeda, the middle link of the chain of stars running northeast from the Great Square — and it has a second career that suits its meaning exactly: Mirach is the signpost every stargazer uses to find the Andromeda Galaxy, hopping from it two stars north to the great spiral. A small smudge of a galaxy sits only arcminutes from the star itself and is called Mirach's Ghost, hiding in its glow. The star, in other words, is how the eye reaches things far greater than the star.

The myth

The name descends, by a chain of copying errors, from the Arabic for girdle: the sash at the waist of the chained princess. Where Alpheratz is Andromeda's head and its story is escape, Mirach is her middle — the held centre of the figure — and the tradition gives it to Venus whole: warmth, receptivity, devotion, beauty, the fortunate marriage, the loved home. It is one of the sky's plainest stars of companionship: not the passion that begins a bond but the steady central warmth that keeps one.
