In the sky

Dabih is a small crowd disguised as a binocular double: two points three and a half arcminutes apart, the brighter an orange bright giant some 390 light-years away with a hot blue companion close in, the fainter a white star with attendants of its own — five stars in all, by the current count, in a layered household. It sits just below Giedi at the Sea-Goat's head, in the autumn sky. The name is from the Arabic the butcher — from an old asterism the Arabs called the lucky star of the slaughterer, one of a run of "lucky" names across this quarter of the sky that the tradition read in every mood but lucky.

The myth

A butcher's is the oldest trade of judgement: what is sound, what is not, and the cut made without sentiment once the judgement is fixed. The tradition gives Dabih Saturn with Venus and a suspicious file — distrust, reserve, misfortune through associates — which the catalogue reads as the working virtue it describes: a star that trusts slowly, and is usually right to. What it really gives, the line says, is discernment — a rare eye for who is worth keeping — and a loyalty that holds absolutely once given.
