Alhena is the third-brightest star of Gemini, a white subgiant 109 light-years away just finishing the first long chapter of its life, with an unseen companion on a twelve-year orbit. It marks the forward foot of Pollux, the eastern twin — the foot set down on the ecliptic road, where the Sun passes each midsummer. The name is from the Arabic for the brand: the mark burned on the neck of a camel — the sign, visible from a distance, that a creature has an owner, a history, a story written on the body.
