In the sky

Agena is the eleventh-brightest star in the sky, and what the eye takes for one blue point is three: a close pair of hot giant stars with a third circling further out, some three hundred and sixty light-years away, each of them enormously more luminous than the Sun. It stands beside Bungula in the deep southern sky, the inner of the two Pointers whose line leads to the Southern Cross, and like its neighbour it never rises for most of the northern hemisphere. Navigators' charts now call it Hadar; the astrological tradition kept Agena, and the Book keeps both names in reach.

The myth

This is the centaur's other foreleg — the second hoof of Chiron, whose nearer step is Bungula. The two stars have moved as a pair in every tradition that saw them: pointers, companions, the front feet of one wise creature. Where Bungula, the nearest star of all, reads as the near friend, Agena carries the stride — the step that takes the civilised centaur out among company. Ptolemy gives it Venus with Jupiter, the two benefics, and Robson's summary has held: honour, refinement, good morals, good health, and friendship in high places. It is one of the most simply fortunate stars in the southern sky, with its cautions all of the social kind. One concrete observation completes the portrait: the grace is a code, not a costume. The native keeps form — dress, manner, composure — through unglamorous and even dirty work, and is somehow elegant mucking out the stable, which is exactly when the elegance means something.

What it gives

• Rooms that open upward The native rises through company. Doors are held from the inside — the mentor who adopts them early, the patron who asks for them by name — and the career, traced honestly, is a chain of such introductions.
• A manner that recommends Refinement here is practical: people with much to lose feel safe with this native, and confide, delegate and promote accordingly. The trust is generally deserved, which is why it compounds.
• Vitality The tradition specifically grants health — a robust constitution, and the stamina that lets the native keep the pace their company sets without visible strain.
• The good word What this placement says about others carries. A sentence of the native's praise opens more for a colleague than a season of the colleague's own effort, and natives who learn this early become quietly instrumental in many careers.

What to watch for

• Standing on loan A position built of patrons' favour stands on their continued goodwill, not on the native's work. When the patron falls or cools — and in high places both are routine — whatever was not independently earned goes too.

Keep one body of work that stands with no patron's name on it — the thing that would survive every door closing. It is the difference between a position and a career.
